How To Make a Deliciously Spicy Vegan Onion Boil
Jump to Recipe

I love watching food videos on TikTok. Not only does it give me some great recipes to keep in my back pocket, it also gives me some great inspiration to create my own veganized dishes.

Today’s recipe is inspired by the viral onion boil, which I’ve made several times now.

If you happen to be an onion lover like myself, I can almost guarantee you’ll love this just as much as I do.

I’m going to show you how to make it in this post. It’s actually quite simple, and is the perfect side dish (or late-night craving).

The Ingredients

The seasonings are by far the most important part of this recipe. Most will be measured with the heart. In fact, this recipe is very much a “by the heart” recipe.

In all the times I’ve made it, I’ve used full-sized onions. But today, I used pearl onions!

It may not seem like it fits, but the brown sugar is one of the key ingredients to this, but not too much. Just enough to give the dish a little kiss of sweetness.

The Prep

You’ll start with one stick of vegan butter. Now this could be Imperial, it could be Earth Balance, just whatever you have.

For the spices, you’ll use: lemon pepper, MSG, cayenne pepper, cajun seasoning, parsley flakes, onion powder, garlic powder and paprika. Measure all of these with the heart!

I also like to add a little vegan steak seasoning, just a splash. We will taste for salt and pepper in a minute.

Next, we’ll add 1/2 teaspoon of vegan chicken bouillon or powder. This stuff is very salty, which is why I’m only adding 1/2 teaspoon. But it does impart some nice flavor!

We’ll also add 1 teaspoon of brown sugar to this. As mentioned earlier, it gives a nice kiss of sweetness. Also, add 1/3 of a cup of water.

Whisk all of the spices into the butter, then taste for salt and pepper. Be careful with the salt!

You may not even need any salt, but taste and adjust to your liking.

Finally, we’ll pour our onions into a metal or ceramic pan (I wouldn’t recommend using glass unless you’ve thawed your onions first).

Bake your onions at 375F for about 45-60 minutes, until the onions are cooked through and golden brown to your liking.

The Final Dish

This onion boil is so flavorful, spicy and delicious, and it’s so easy to make too! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

My favorite way to enjoy it is with some vegan cheesy ramen on the side. That I know of, the black package of Buldak as well as the Taco flavor are vegan!

Let’s get cooking!
