6 Plant Based Soup Options You Can Find At The Grocery Store

As much as I like to keep my diet to mainly more-fresh less-processed foods, sometimes prepared foods can be a lifesaver.

When a cold day comes and you’d rather not stand in the kitchen chopping vegetables and boiling broth, you’ll be grateful to have a supply of vegan canned soups in your cupboard.

Most of the ones listed below can be found right in the average grocery store. So all you need is a pot and a stove (or even just a bowl and a microwave) and you could be eating some warm, comforting soup in five minutes flat!

1. Well Yes! Harvest Carrot & Ginger Sipping Soup.

This is by far the easiest vegan soup option I can offer. You don’t even need to pour it in a bowl or pot; you just heat it in the microwave and sip it right out of the container! It’s a creamy, sweet soup that’s perfect for the laziest of days (or even on-the-go).

Why I love it: Easiest to heat and serve.

[For the record, the option pictured at the beginning of the post, the Butternut Squash & Sweet Potato, is a vegetarian option (not vegan) that I borrowed from my parent’s cupboard. It’s still a good option if you happen to be vegetarian, but my sleep-deprived brain accidentally included it in the post photo. Sorry lol]

2. Hormel Vegetarian Chili With Beans.

This one is a really hearty vegan chili that’s perfect for cold winter nights. I would say that out of all the soups on this list, this one is probably one of the “meatiest” options, that could easily stand in for a meal. I like mine with some vegan cheddar shreds melted on top!

Why I love it: Heartiest option, could be a meal on it’s own.

3. Progresso Vegetable Classics Lentil Soup.

This one is an old favorite and one of my first vegan store-bought soup experiences. This one is great because I’m pretty sure you could find it just about anywhere. It’s a savory, satisfying option—and a nice emergency fallback if you can’t find any other options.

Why I love it: Widely available and “accidentally” vegan.

4. Gardein’s Plant-Based Soups.

I am definitely a fan of Gardein’s line of soups, they are indeed some of my favorites. I would have to say that their Chick’n Nood’l is my absolute fave, but they are all excellent. The downside is that they can be relatively pricey, but if you’re up for the splurge they’re worth it in my opinion.

Why I love it: Tastes very much like the real thing.

5. Nissin Top Ramen Soy Sauce (Vegetarian-Specified).

While we’re talking options here, this one is by far the cheapest. You can get a 6 pack of these for $1.59 (roughly 26 cents a package), which is amazing considering it’s “accidentally” vegan. Just be sure to grab the vegetarian-specified version (pictured), because I’ve seen/heard of different brands/variations using beef stock.

You may want to do a little playing with the spices on this one, add some cooked veggies, or sub the seasoning packet with a different flavoring to make it more exciting. But considering the relative cheapness of this option, I couldn’t not include it in this post.

Why I love it: It’s a great option for penny-pinching vegans who want a warm bowl of soup.

6. Progresso Vegetable Classics Vegetarian Vegetable With Barley.

As mentioned earlier, Progresso is a great standby when you can’t find anything else since the brand is widely available in many supermarkets. The vegetarian vegetable is a tangy, veggie-packed soup with a tomato-y broth. The barley adds a nice touch of protein and fiber. Not to mention the whole can is only 190 calories, making it a nice lower-calorie pairing for a vegan grilled cheese.

Why I love it: It’s lower in calories and packed with veggies.

P.P.S. As always, make sure to check ingredient labels before you buy! Companies can sometimes change their recipe (and thereby, their ingredient lists) without warning, so it’s best to be sure and double-check the ingredients (sometimes products even have a “certified vegan” seal, which you can learn more about at vegan.org).

    • Hi Debbie! My apologies for the delayed response. All the soups mentioned in this post are vegan and, therefore, also dairy-free. Be sure to double-check the labels when you’re in the store, as sometimes brands may change their recipes from time to time. Thanks for stopping by my blog!
