How To Make Mouthwatering TVP Sloppy Joes
Growing up, sloppy joes were a staple meal in my house. That darling can of Manwich was a family favorite, not to mention an easy weeknight dish to prepare.
As a vegan, my love for food–and the classics–has not changed.
The only change is the ingredients I use, meaning I’m no stranger to sinking my teeth into a deliciously saucy vegan sloppy joe.
While you can buy vegan meat replacers at the store, such as Impossible or Beyond Beef, there are times that I prefer to use TVP, or textured vegetable protein.
The great thing about TVP is that it comes dry, meaning when you rehydrate it, you can allow it to soak up whatever flavors you’d like (be it from vegetable stock, spices, sauces or anything else).
TVP is also miraculously inexpensive compared to other vegan meat replacers, coming in at about $4.99 for 12 ounces dry (it rehydrates to about double the size).
This means that each serving of TVP comes out to about 34 cents!
Of course, the best part of sloppy joes is the tangy sauce. My recipe may be from scratch, but it tastes so much like the real thing!
Just four ingredients–ketchup, dijon mustard, minced garlic and brown sugar–come together to make a sauce that definitely rivals that can of Manwich.
This is one of my favorite recipes I’ve come up with to date, so I absolutely hope you enjoy it as much as I do 🙂
Mouthwatering TVP Sloppy Joes
Ingredients
- 1 cup textured vegetable protein (I used Bob's Red Mill)
- 1 cup vegetable broth
- small white onion
- small green pepper
- 1 tbsp oil (I used olive oil)
Sloppy Joe Sauce
- 2.5 tbsp dijon mustard
- 1.5 cups tomato ketchup
- 3 tbsp brown sugar
- 1.5 tbsp minced garlic
To Serve
- 4 buns of choice
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the textured vegetable protein and the vegetable broth. Allow to rehydrate for 15 minutes.
- In the meantime, chop the onion and pepper. In a separate small bowl, combine the ingredients for the Sloppy Joe Sauce and set aside for now.
- Heat a medium saute pan over medium heat. Add the oil, then add the chopped onion and pepper. Cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until slightly soft.
- Add the tvp mixture to the onion/pepper and stir. Heat, stirring semi-often, for 15 minutes, to cook through and slightly brown.
- Stir in the Sloppy Joe Sauce and allow to simmer for 1-2 minutes, stirring once or twice, until heated throughout.
- Spoon sloppy joe mix evenly into four buns. Serve, and enjoy!
I hope this recipe finds you and your kitchen in good spirits! Until next time, peace 🙂
